World War II was the first time in its history that Britain faced a concentrated threat from the air. This aerial threat necessitated some discussion about how the British government would run the impending war and from where. Initially, there was some talk of evacuating key personnel out of London and, if necessary, to the West Country. This was dismissed due to the adverse effect such a move was expected to have on public morale.

A quick survey of suitable London basements took pace in early 1938 and on 31 May the site was confirmed as the space underneath the western end of the New Public Offices. The site was close to both Downing Street and Parliament.

Over the next few months Churchill’s War Rooms were established.

In July 1940 the Battle of Britain commenced and on 29 July Churchill’s war cabinet met for the first time in the Cabinet War Room from where Britain’s defence was being coordinated.

About the author

Robbie Cheadle was born in London in the United Kingdom. Her father died when she was three months old and her mother immigrated to South Africa with her tiny baby girl. Robbie has lived in Johannesburg, George and Cape Town in South Africa and attended fourteen different schools. This gave her lots of opportunities to meet new people and learn lots of social skills as she was frequently “the new girl”.

Robbie is a qualified Chartered Accountant and specialises in corporate finance with a specific interest in listed entities and stock markets. Robbie has written a number of publications on listing equities and debt instruments in Africa and foreign direct investment into Africa.

Robbie is married to Terence Cheadle and they have two lovely boys, Gregory and Michael. Michael (aged 11) is the co-author of the Sir Chocolate series of books and attends school in Johannesburg. Gregory (aged 14) is an avid reader and assists Robbie and Michael with filming and editing their YouTube videos and editing their books.

In 2013, four days of vehicular gridlock began near the George Washington Bridge when two of three approach lanes from Fort Lee, New Jersey, were blocked off; the traffic jam was later blamed on loyalists to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over the refusal of Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich to endorse Christie for re-election. (Christie denied any prior knowledge of the lane closures.)

In 1919, some 1,100 members of Boston’s 1,500-man police force went on strike. (The strike was broken by Massachusetts Gov. Calvin Coolidge with replacement officers.)

In 1942, during World War II, a Japanese plane launched from a submarine off the Oregon coast dropped a pair of incendiary bombs in a failed attempt at igniting a massive forest fire; it was the first aerial bombing of the U.S. mainland by a foreign power.

PROGRAM: Forensic Linguistics: Language as Evidence

Program: The Unabomber case. Kurt Kobain’s suicide note. Russian cyber crimes. The Exxon Mobil disaster. Police interrogations. Plagiarism disputes. Forensic linguistics has played an important role in resolving these situations and more. A relatively new discipline, forensic linguistics has become an essential part of modern crime investigations. Forensic linguists analyze language evidence to assist law enforcement to solve crimes. In this talk, linguistic anthropologist Harriet Ottenheimer will discuss this new field. The presentation will be interactive, with real examples to analyze. 

Speaker: Harriet Ottenheimer writes on language and culture for encyclopedias, magazines, and academic journals. Her analysis of the language of African scam letters is well-known in the cyber security community. She has also analyzed linguistic evidence for the U.S. Government. Her best-selling book, The Anthropology of Language, is now in its fourth edition. Her publications include a bilingual dictionary, a CD of African music, a documentary film, and a blues singer’s autobiography. Harriet earned her BA in literature from Bennington College and her Ph.D. in anthropology from Tulane University. She taught anthropology and ethnic studies at Kansas State University and on a Fulbright appointment to Charles University (in Prague). She is a past president of the Central States Anthropological Society and of the National Association for Ethnic Studies. Now “emerita” Harriet writes mystery novels featuring an amateur sleuth who analyzes language evidence to assist law enforcement to solve crimes.
